About This Project

For all this information in Welsh please scroll down

What  diabetes means to me” is a creative project to help us all to understand the impact of diabetes on people, and their families and friends, as well as people who work in the field of diabetes.  There are many misconceptions about Type 1, Type 2 and other types of diabetes, and very often the voices of people who live and work with diabetes remain unheard. As the Diabetes Research Group, we wanted to create an opportunity for everyone who knows something about diabetes to share some of their experience during this centenary year of the discovery of insulin.

EVERYONE'S CONTRIBUTIONS ARE UPLOADED AS THEY ARE SENT IN -

Please scroll down to after the instructions to see these - updated regularly.

In 2019, on World Diabetes Day, a group of people came together at Cardiff School of Medicine and we started this project. Everyone was asked to draw a picture to answer the question “What does diabetes mean to me?” Some examples are shown below. Scientists use glass slides to look at tissue samples under the microscope.  So everyone drew their pictures onto an enlarged version of a glass slide.

For the upcoming Centenary of the discovery of Insulin in 2021, we want at least 150 drawings or photos.  You do not need to be Van Gogh or any kind of artist, or brilliant at drawing.  We want your experience, honesty and ideas.

Your contributions will be printed onto clear plastic, that represents the shape of a microscope slide, and all displayed together in the Hearth Gallery at University Hospital Llandough, Wales for one month in Oct/Nov 2021.  You will all be invited to come and see the exhibition, in person if possible, and we will organise an online gallery tour.

This is an ambitious project, as we want lots of different people, of different ages to take part – in other words, everyone from 1 to 100+, who has diabetes or knows someone with diabetes. If you can, please ask 2 or more of your friends and family to send a picture.  We also want contributions from healthcare professionals and scientists working in the field of diabetes.  In other words, we want contributions from everyone who has any connection with diabetes.

Everyone who participates will be sent a certificate, so do make sure we have your contact details when you send your drawings to us.  We would like all contributions by 15th August 2021 (extended), to give us time to put them together for the project.

Am y digwyddiad yea

Beth mae diabetes yn ei olygu i mi” yn brosiect creadigol i helpu'r cyhoedd i ddeall effaith diabetes ar bobl, a'u teuluoedd a'u ffrindiau, yn ogystal â phobl sy'n gweithio ym maes diabetes. Credwn fod diabetes yn cael ei gamddeall yn gyffredinol, ac mae yna lawer o gamdybiaethau ynghylch Math 1, Math 2 a phob diabetes arall. Mae lleisiau pobl sy'n byw ac yn gweithio gyda diabetes heb eu clywed yn aml iawn. Yn ystod y flwyddyn canmlwyddiant hon o ddarganfod inswlin, mae’r Grŵp Ymchwil Diabetes wedi greu cyfle i bawb sy'n gwybod rhywbeth am Diabetes i rannu eu profiadau.

Yn 2019, ar Ddiwrnod Diabetes y Byd, daeth grŵp o bobl ynghyd yn Ysgol Feddygaeth Caerdydd a gwnaethom ddechrau'r prosiect hwn. Gofynnwyd i bawb dynnu llun i ateb y cwestiwn “Beth mae diabetes yn ei olygu i mi?" Dyma rai enghreifftiau.
