About This Exhibition

For all this information in Welsh please scroll down

What  diabetes means to us” is a creative project to help us all to understand the impact of diabetes on people, and their families and friends, as well as people who work in the field of diabetes.  There are many misconceptions about Type 1, Type 2 and other types of diabetes, and very often the voices of people who live and work with diabetes remain unheard. As the Diabetes Research Group, we wanted to create an opportunity for everyone who knows something about diabetes to share some of their experience during this centenary year of the discovery of insulin.

In 2019, on World Diabetes Day, a group of people came together at Cardiff School of Medicine and we started this project. Everyone was asked to draw a picture to answer the question “What does diabetes mean to me?” Scientists use glass slides to look at tissue samples under the microscope,  so everyone drew their pictures onto an enlarged version of a glass slide.

We also asked YOU, online, to help let everyone know what diabetes is and your experiences of living with it too.  We received 107 wonderful drawings, paintings, photographs and poems, which are on Instagram and are displayed below, between the English and Welsh information.
Thank you very much to all who have contributed.

All the artwork produced as part of this project will be displayed in an exhibition at the Hearth Gallery, Llandough Hospital.

What Diabetes Means To Us 2021
We have been working with Bridget O’Brien, an artist interested in Science and Art, particularly, the images that scientists produce in the process of their research.  Her work also explores the connections between creativity and well-being. The exhibition will showcase:
*  2 films made by the Diabetes Research Team introducing everyone to their work,

*  2 artworks by Bridget O’Brien, culminating from her residency with the Diabetes Research Group,
*  the collective project featuring submissions from more than 100 people from around the world telling us what diabetes means to them
*  a history project that includes reflections from people living in Wales who have lived with diabetes between 37 years, and more than 50 years

Am y digwyddiad yea

Beth mae diabetes yn ei olygu i ni” yn brosiect creadigol i helpu'r cyhoedd i ddeall effaith diabetes ar bobl, a'u teuluoedd a'u ffrindiau, yn ogystal â phobl sy'n gweithio ym maes diabetes. Mae yna lawer o gamdybiaethau ynghylch Math 1, Math 2 a mathau eraill o ddiabetes, ac yn aml iawn mae lleisiau pobl sy'n byw ac yn gweithio gyda diabetes heb eu clywed. Fel Grŵp Ymchwil Diabetes, redden ni eisiau greu cyfle i bawb sy'n gwybod rhywbeth am ddiabetes i rannu eu profiadau yn ystod blwyddyn canmlwyddiant ers darganfod inswlin.

Yn 2019, ar Ddiwrnod Diabetes y Byd, ymgasglodd grŵp o bobl yn yr Ysgol Feddygaeth yng Nghaerdydd i ddechrau'r prosiect yma. Barhaodd y Gwaith gyda gweithdy yn 2020. Gofynnwyd i bawb dynnu llun i ateb y cwestiwn “Beth mae diabetes yn ei olygu i mi?" Mae gwyddonwyr yn defnyddio sleidiau gwydr i edrych ar samplau meinwe o dan y microsgop, felly tynnodd pawb eu lluniau ar fersiwn fwy o sleid wydr.
Gofynnwyd i CHI, ar-lein, i helpu ddweud wrth bawb beth yw diabetes ac eich profiadau o fyw gyda’r afiechyd. u. Cawsom 107 o luniau, ffotograffau a cherddi rhyfeddol. Diolch yn fawr iawn i bawb sydd wedi cyfrann.
Bydd y casgliad o waith celf a cherddi o’r prosiect yn cael eu harddangos yn Oriel Hearth, Ysbyty Llandough.

Rydym wedi bod yn gweithio gyda Bridget O’Brien. Arlunydd yw hi sydd â diddordeb mewn Gwyddoniaeth a Chelf, yn enwedig, y delweddau a gynhyrchwyd gan wyddonwyr trwy eu gwaith ymchwil. Mae ei gwaith hefyd yn archwilio'r cysylltiadau rhwng creadigrwydd a lles. Uchalbwyntiau'r arddangosfa yw:
*  2 ffilm wedi eu paratoi gan y Grwp Ymchwil Diabetes sy’n cyflwyno eu gwaith i bawb,
*  2 gwaith celf gan Bridget O’Brien sy’n ganlyniad I’w chyfnod preswyl gyda’r Grwp Ymchwil Diabetes,
*  y prosiect cyfan yn cynnwys cyflwyniadau gan fwy na 100 o bobl o bob cwr o’r byd yn dweud wrthym beth mae diabetes yn ei olygu iddyn nhw,
*  prosiect hanes sy’n cynnwys myfyrdodau gan bobl sy’n byw yng Nghymru sydd wedi byw gyda diabetes rhwng 37 a dros 50 mlynedd.

Noddwyr a Chefnogwyr Digwyddiad

Rydym wedi treulio misoedd lawer yn cynllunio ein digwyddiad, ac ni fyddai dim ohono'n bosibl heb ein cefnogwyr rhyfeddol, wedi rhoi'r gefnogaeth ariannol ac ymarferol sydd ei hangen arnom. Diolch yn fawr iawn!

Diolch yn fawr i'r Athro Anwen Williams am gyfieithu i Gymraeg.
